Amidst all the banners and the neon signs of food establishments in the sprawling city, there are only a select few worth visiting. In this article, we guide you to the best restaurants in one of the top global cities of the world so you know where to eat when you’re there.
New York
- Locanda Verde – Andrew Carmellini helms this Italian restaurant in TriBeCa. The dish that most reviewers recommend is the sheep-milk ricotta served with herbs. The patries of Karen DeMasco gives a hearty breakfasts in the restaurant its muffin top with her signature lemon tarts and coffee cake.

- Má Pêche – Part of David Chang’s Momofoku chain of restaurants, Má Pêche serves French-Vietnamese cuisine. Sit down at the raw bar and order some oysters or Alaskan King Crab. Enjoy the pork ribs served with lemongrass with a sauce of caramel.
- El Quinto Pino – for some daring Mexican dishes, go to El Quinto Pino and drink their pomada while enjoying a plateful of gambas and some panino.
- Aldea – Aldea’s George Mendes serves some very elegant dinners. Go for their salt-cod croquettes while eating it with rustic rice which is peppered with duck confit, chorizo bits and olives.
- Marea – Michael White combines fruit flavors and seafood in this fine establishment. Order his fusilli pasta which cream uses octopus braised in wine and his brodetto.
- Ardesia – This wine bar serves simple but interesting eats in its quail-egg toast and its pretzels.
- Terroir Tribeca – This bar serves an impressive wine list without being intimidating. Couple the bubblies with some meatballs and sausages re-imagined by Chef Marco Canora and you’ll be back for more.
- Bar Maialino – Head out there early and secure a spot on the seat with a view of the Gramercy Park. Order their prosciutto and Lambrusco.
Paris
- Bread & Roses – Eat Parisian matin and get a dose of their bread made of honey and hazelnuts. Their brioche is excellent and their smoked salmon silky. This bakery will keep you visiting again and again.
- La Pâtisserie des Rêves – If you want to marvel at your pastry before eating it, try La Pâtisserie des Rêves which appears more like a gallery than a bakery.
- Le Bac à Glaces – Get cones of their fig sorbet before walking around the many avenues of Paris.
- Rino – Try to get their early, this 20 seater place gets filled up rather quick. With Giovanni Passerini at the kitchen, one can expect multi-layered Italian cooking. Passerini became famous in a restaurant in Rome and worked under Petter Nilsson in Paris. Try the fish roe and the barley risotto.
- L’Agrume – head out to Quartier des Gobelins and eat at the L’Agrume. This place boasts of citrus enriched dishes. Franck Marchesi-Grandi is the master at this restaurant. Order their scallop carpaccio and grapefruit soup.
- Christophe Michalak - the award-winning pastry chef at the Plaza Athénée, offers the scoop on the city’s most decadent treats.
- Des Gâteaux et du Pain – The pastries and the croissant definitely rock at this bakery.
- Du Pain et des Idées – Go to this boulangerie and try some of their baguettes.

Tokyo
- Takahashi – Since the people are already lining up way too early in Tsukiji Market, an alternative is to eat at Takahashi. Eat nizakana with a bento of rice and miso soup. They also have daily special sashimi so check the board for what they are serving.
- Jogetsudo – For a lift after eating, drink some tea at Jogetsudo. Clear your mind with the tea ceremony and eat their matcha ice cream.
- Échiré – Go to Marunouchi Brick Square and wait it out at Echire. When the staff serves the croissants, try to get a few before they run out.
- Akira – If you want a barbecue lunch, try the stickless yakitori at Akira. The tsukune which are meatballs wrapped in shiso will entice you.
- Cacao Sampaka – This is a great place to eat bombons and it’s right near Akira.
- Les Créations de Narisawa – If you want inventive European cuisine and local Japanese ingredients, this restaurant is worth the trip. Yoshihiro Narisawa makes daring dishes like Matsuzaka beef covered by leek ash.
- Maisen – According to Banana Yoshimoto, you know a Japanese restaurant is only as good as its tonkatsu. Try this incarnation by Maisen which is covered in panko crust.
- Konakara – When one is hankering after hotpot, Kanakara is the answer. Try their oden and sip some of their sake to ease out the pangs.
- Rokukakutei – Chow down on kushiage while drinking their cold sake.
10. Tsurontan – A little serving of cold udon and their Koku-Ryu sake will make your cheeks blush while filling your stomach with something good.
San Francisco
- Out the Door, Bush Street Branch – This establishment serves Asian fusion cuisine using natural ingredients. Pick the slow-poached eggs served on top of brisket while sipping on some beef pho. A serving of coco jam buns will also do nicely to round off the breakfast.
- Naked Lunch – Looking for a mid-morning snack? Look for Naked Lunch and order their sandwiches. Try their baguette stuffed with foie gras with some prosciutto accented with truffle salt.

- RN74 – For a great wine tasting encounter, go to RN74 where Rajat Parr will pour you some of what’s in their list. Try the pain de mie with a spreading of salmon terrine.
- Flour & Water – For a heartier dinner, go out for Flour & Water. The name may be boiled down to the essentials but the Italian cuisine is as rich as ever here. Pick ooust some anti-pasti and some salumi. Their thin crust pizzas are worth experiencing.
- Frances – Melissa Perello serves some gourmet comfort food and a low cost pricing policy of a dollar per ounce of their house wines at this restaurant. Get their beignets and combo it with a Madeira.
10. Aziza – For some Moroccan fare, go to Aziza. The egg with charmoula is one of the recommended dishes.
11. Delfina – Delfina’s is it if you want to taste some of Italy’s regional cooking right at San Fran.
12. Zuni Cafe – A definite locavore favorite. Try their pork chops.
Buenos Aires
- Cafe Tortoni – Once frequented by Jorge Luis Borges and Carlos Gardel, enjoy the tortoni, a grilled cheese sandwich with ham and tomato.
- bBlue – Try the bar’s slew of healthy shakes with shots of lemongrass and spirulina. For some bites, their blueberry muffins with yogurt are great accompaniments to the shakes.

- Un’Altra Volta – Dessert afficionados have to visit Un’Altra Volta for a sumptuous array of dishes like sambayón granizado or the dulce de leche.
- Vinoteca Palacio Duhau – Enter the Park Hyatt and into this bar which is tended by Marcelo Rebolé. They have 7,000 bottles in their cellar which will go fine with one of the cheeses they serve.

London
- Modern Pantry – This quirky establishment offers one of the best breakfasts in London. Helmed by Anna Hansen, guests will have an enjoyable time picking on their English breakfast or Modern Pantry’s signature omelettes.
- Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House – The English know their oysters well and this is quite evident at Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House. Get a plate of the oysters and drink Prosecco.
- The Restaurant at St. Paul’s – This treasure is just right behind St. Paul’s Cathedral. Sample their treats like salmon with brocolli and their leek puree. Their gingerbread sandwich filled with ice cream is laced with natural honey.

Sydney
- Kazbah on Darling – If you want to eat where locals are qeueing up weeks for, reserve at Kazbah on Darling. Try Zahi Azzi’s tagines and couscous served with cardamom milk and rhubarb.
- Adriano Zumbo – Do pudding eclairs and macaroons make your tongue twirl? Look for Adriano Zumbo in Balmain.
- Spice Temple – Neil Perry owns this restaurant which is renowned for its lamb pancakes and egg custard. If you like food from Chinese provinces like Hunan and Xinjiang, look nowhere else.
- Mamak – For a bit of Malaysia in Australia, taste Mamak. Order the sambls, curries and roti canai.
- Eau de Vie – Get your fill of some pre-dinner brews at Eau de Vie. Asides from the interiors and the speakeasy mood, the Dark & Stormies concoction will ease you away into dinner.
- Sepia – Sepia is one of the best restaurants in Sydney. The recommended eats here is the spanner crab and the buckwheat risotto with shellfish essence.
- Bodega- For an excellent tapas experience influenced by South American tones, go to Bodega.
- Mecca – Australia has got some beans to brag about as well as top baristas to boot. Try the perfectly brewed coffee roasted with care in their house roaster.
- Single Origin Roasters – An outdoorsy cafe with a community appeal and baristas with attitude mark this establishment from the rest.

11. Campos Coffee – This coffeehouse never runs out of customers and the staff usually fills in 200 cups an hour. People are raving about their new Obama blend which offers a cup that uplifts its drinker?
Copenhagen
- Coffee Collective – Created by the Klaus Thomsen, a champion of the World Barista competitios, this coffee place is one of the best in Copenhagen. Sip the Hacienda Esmeralda tinged with bergamot.
- Karamelleriet – If you want to see Tiggy and have her make candies for you, visit this great place for butterscotch.
- Noma – This restaurant has been deemed as the best restaurant in the globe by the critics at Restaurant magazine. René Redzepi will dazzle you with ingredients made out of local ingredients. Prepare for some salsify with milk skin and truffle purée.
- Ved Stranden 10 – For some serious wine drinking in Copenhagen pick up the list at Ved Stranden 10. The wine bar was once a tea shop and the appealing interiors left over from that time will definitely give your wine that extra tinge when you quaff it.
- Kødbyens Fiskebar – The establishment which now houses Kødbyens Fiskebar was a slaughterhouse before. Piscetarians however will be delighted that Kødbyens Fiskebar has moved away from that legacy and now serves seafood. Eat their pollack ceviche and eat some oysters at their raw bar.
- Ruby – Take a walk around the Gammel Strand and step into Ruby’s for some Red Rum which is a mix of currants and sloe gin shaken with Bacardi.
- Aamanns Etablissement – Smørrebrød heaven! Eat these open faced delicacies at Aamanns Etablissement. One of their top dishes is the one with herring smattered with capers, potatoes and lovage dressed using elderberry vinaigrette.
- Restaurant Schønnemann – This establishment may not have open tables because of the stream of patrons coming in. But when you have a chance, try the halibut and truffled egg smørrebrød. Try their aquavits as well.
- Royal Café – This place pushes the envelope when it comes to their smørrebrød. Try the one with sushi and couple it with the ham salad served with quail eggs.
Barcelona
- Bar Velódromo – Carles Abellán sizzles up this landmark restaurant with some great breakfast like the eggs and tortillas or estrellados combo. The croissants from pastry chef Oriol Balaguer are obligatory treats.
- Jamonísimo – You got that right, for some serious Iberican ham treats go to Jamonisimo.
- Bravo 24 – If you want to eat some fine steaks, this other restaurant from Carles Abellán will delight the palate.
- Casa Gispert – For some healthy snacks while going around the city, go to Casa Gispert and get their pistachios and roasted Marcona almonds.
- Bubó – Candy is dandy at Bubó. Opt for their bonbons from Carles Mampel.
- Porta Gaig – If you’ve just arrived at Barcelona, this restaurant at the airport will give you a great impression of the local cuisine. The dish everyone loves to order is macaroni timbale.
- B Lounge – For some wining and some serious tapas dining, B Lounge is the place.
- Saltimbocca – Spanish pizzas? Why not? Eat pizzas at Saltimbocca and enjoy the sourdough crust topped with melted cheese and sobresada sausage.
- La Plata – The bodega called Barri Gotic offers an experience called La Plata. La Plata offers fried sardines with a onion and tomato salad.
10. Bar Mandri – This outdoor bar offers great eats in their patatas bravas and their tapas.
11. El Quim de la Boquería – This may be just a simple market stall but the chefs at Barcelona simply adore this place and the dish o Ilanqueta.
12. La Clara – A great place which serves Spanish comfort food. We recommend that house cannelloni.
Hong Kong
- Capital Cafe – Try out this bing sutt, Hongkong diners which fuse elements of Western and Asian breakfast food. Try the the toast lavishly topped with scrambled eggs and a siding of beef
- Tam Keung’s Congee – If you want to taste rice porridge which ingredients were culled from nearby farms, Tam Keung’s is it. Tam Keung himself raises the fish for his congee in a pond near his home and he makes his soy sauce himself.
- Chairman Restaurant – For some great Chinese lunch, eat at the Chairman Restaurant. Enjoy the flower crab braised in wine as well as their pork and fish patties.
- Habitat Lounge – Drink some cocktails while viewing the sprawling city from a commanding view in Wan Chai through the windows of Habitat Lounge.
- Yin Yang – Margaret Xu quit her advertising job to start Yin Yang. Xu maintains her own organic garden which turns into her delicies like the tofu and her rice cakes. Try her slow roasted chicken with terra cotta.
- City Hall Maxim’s Palace – This large colossal restaurant is one of the favorites of Hong Kong families when it comes to dimsum dining. Hail one of the carts and enjoy treats like taro puffs, king prawns, and braised chicken feet.
- Man Wah – The Mandarin Oriental hosts this great restaurant with chichi dimsum. The Wagyu beef is second to none and their rolls made of foie gras and prawn are sublime.
