New York City Hotel Remarketer Tax Set to Begin Sept. 1
The National Tour Association and other trade associations have been in contact with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to urge the elimination of the new tax New York City enacted on remarketers of hotel rooms, which is scheduled for implementation Sept. 1. The remarketer tax, enacted in late June as an amendment to New York’s Hotel Occupancy Tax, requires that anyone who resells a New York hotel room remit a tax based on the full amount paid by the customer, including any service fees or charges. A “remarketer” is defined to mean “any person, excluding the [hotel] operator, having any right, access, ability or authority, through an Internet transaction or any other means whatsoever, to offer, reserve, book, arrange for, remarket, distribute, broker, resell or facilitate the transfer of rooms.” To gauge the potential impact of the remarketer tax on tour operators currently booking hotel room to New York City, a brief survey will be sent to tour operators. NTA is monitoring this situation closely and will report any new developments on NTA Online. For more information, visit www.ntaonline.com.
