Budget Travel: Enjoying Sydney without burning your pockets

Although you cannot deny the fact that expensive is one the best words that describe when exploring Sydney. Renting a house during your visit or buying the basic supplies will be the least of your worries.  What you need to prepare for and plan well will be how you will dine, where you will have some drinks, and which spots you want to visit.

You need to know where you have to go so you can stretch your budget and make most of the Sydney holiday.

Accommodation

If you are on a budget, don’t go for the well-known hotels and all the nice pictures that you may take in their suites. Go for a hostel which may charge between $30 to $80. You can book a room with YHA, a known Sydney hostel that boasts of a decent environment, friendly staff, and clean rooms.

Another good option is the 3-star Australian Heritage Hotel which has a great pub and decent rooms starting at around $70.  Hotel 59 along Rushcutters Bay and Saint Marks Lodge charges $88 per night. Other cheap but nice accommodations include the St. John’s College and the Wesley College offering rooms at $65 per night.

You can also look for some hostels a few minutes from the CBD. These will be a lot cheaper. The good transportation system of the city means no problem for you commuting to the different places that you want to see.

Getting around

Based on my personal experience, I would recommend walking as the best mode of exploring the CBD. You can take the 555 bus which goes around the area for free. It is not advisable to ride the water taxis or the monorail since where you can go to will be very limited.

If you are going beyond the possibilities of strolling, I suggest you take the train or bus. The taxi drivers in Sydney are really courteous but they also are not cheap.

Get those passes which will allow you to go on and off the bus, ferry or train for a whole day or even for a few days. This will save you a lot of money.

Sightseeing

Aside from taking a picture with the Sydney Opera House in the background, there’s a ton of stuff you can do while in Sydney. Yes, even on a budget. You do not have to pay for a tour of the city and join other tourists. Browse the interwebs and download a walking tour to your IPod or mp3 player which you can listen to while walking around. Conquering the Harbour Bridge might set you back $200 so an alternative will be to go up the Pylon Lookout.

There are also a lot of art galleries if you are an art lover.  Check out the Contemporary Art Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Powerhouse Museum. When you explore the Rocks, you can check a number of galleries featuring aboriginal arts.

Dining and Entertainment in Sydney

With all the walking that we are suggesting here, a sandwich will not be enough when you go around Sydney. You need some good, satisfying meal. You can grab a bite without spending $20 for a burger and fries. Look for cafes which serve real treats for just around $6.  There are a lot of nooks which serve good food and give you a discount if you order the food for take-out instead of dining in.

If you are around the Circular Quay, get those meat pies which are quite heavy for around $5. Just near the CBD, you can find Chinese, Indian, and other Asian restaurants which will please your palate and not hurt your pocket. The Chinatown in Sydney is home to almost 70 restaurants which can serve you a wide range of dishes that hit the spot. I personally go for the dimsum and yum cha at Marygold Citymark.

Visit Cheers along George Street in the CBD for their $10 fish and chips, burgers, or schnitzel every night. Vegetarians will find the Big Bite Sydney as their paradise in the Sydney with a gigantic sanga for only $9. Plan B serves soups, sandwiches, and Wagyu burger for around $10.  The Flying Fajita Sistas can give you some Mexican treats like sot tacos for $3 every Tuesday which comes with a shot of tequila.

If you are planning to have some cocktails or a round of beer, get to the bars or pubs before 7pm or their usual happy hour. You can get a glass of wine for $4 from bars along the Darling Harbour. The Sanctuary Hotel and the Mars Lounge serve cocktails for $4 to $10.

Experiencing a show at the Opera House will set you back around $35. You can watch the Conductor Series presented by the Conservatorium of Music for just around $20. Of course there are free shows along the Darling Harbour which is best enjoyed while enjoying the breeze and a bottle of beer. In case you want to watch a film while in Sydney, go on Tuesdays when tickets are on a discount by 50%.

Shopping

Considering that you are on a budget, it will be wise not to be tempted to visit signature shops like Gucci and Burberry. Instead go to the Paddy’s Market at Darling Harbor where for very low prices, you can shop for souvenirs, clothes, and a ton of other items. You should also checkout Hot Dollar if you pass by the Westfield Mall and Birkenhead Point at Drummoyne.

Practical Tips when travelling with pets this holiday season

As you try to arrange your travel for this holiday, you cannot help but think about the welfare of your lovable canine or feline friends. We surely cannot leave them behind if there is no one who can take care of them. In this case, the family pet will have to go with you on your holiday. Here are some useful tips when bringing your pet on transit:

Vet clearance

Just like for us humans, pets are also stressed out when they travel. It is important for you to bring the furry cute rascal to the veterinarian for a general check-up.  It will also come handy if you can get a referral to a good vet in your destination.

To see if your pet is fit to travel, the vet will do a physical. Vaccinations which will help protect your pet and which will help suffice certain regulations should be administered. The vet will let you know if your family pet is fit to travel. It will be more comfortable for your pet to go on a flight in the evening when it is a bit cooler.

Most airlines will ask you for a health certificate for your pet. It should bet within 10 days prior to your travel. You should also remember that your pet might be subjected to a period of quarantine when you arrive at your destination. You can ask your travel agent if this applies to your destination.

You can call your embassy or other concerned agencies about a month before your flight so you can ask about regulations they may have in their state or territories. This way you can avoid all the hassles and also make sure your pet is safe. Some places require entry permits while other countries limit the period of stay for certain pets.

Identification

Make sure that your pet has your name and phone number on its tag. Also bring familiar toys so it will relax a bit during the journey.  Just in case, bring some photos of your pets which may be useful if it gets lost.

Pets and Planes

Most airlines limit the number of animals on board. Make sure that you notify your agent to contact the airline so necessary reservations can be made. You should also inquire about the dimensions of the pet carrier allowed by the airline. Most airlines require that the dog or cat should be at least 2 months old before it can board a plane. Never bring subject a pregnant pet to air travel. Write or printout feeding instructions which you can post on your pet’s carrier even during short flights.

Some domestic flights permit small pet carriers holding animals less than fifteen pounds. These small kennels can practically fit under the seat just in front of you but make sure you inform the nearby passengers that you have a pet with you in case they want to switch seats or in case they have allergies. If you will be bringing your pet with you, always bring a scooper and paper towels for you know what. For international flights, you can pay extra so they can ship bigger animals in the forward cargo area where temperature is better controlled.

Travel Kennel

While you make sure that you are getting a good seat on the plane, make sure that you are getting a good travelling kennel for your pet. Introduce the travel kennel to your pet a few days before your scheduled travel. Let him sleep and eat there. You can throw in your old shirt so you can assure your pet that it is okay to go in there.

Label the kennel “Live Animal” if you are shipping your family pet. Also draw arrows to make everyone understand that the kennel should be upright always. Make sure you have clean pet dishes for food and water. Secure the door of the kennel but do not place locks cause airport or airline personnel may do some checks.  Aside from the tag on the collar, put your name and contact information on the kennel.

By the way, do not forget to ask your travel agent if there will be an extra cost if you will travel with your pet buddy.

Road Trip

If you are travelling by road, one of your primary concerns will be heat stroke. In case you are travelling on a hot and humid day, make sure the pet goes out when you get off the car. If this is not possible, park in a shaded area and leave the windows a bit open to allow good air circulation.

Before setting off, check that your vehicle’s air con is working properly. It is also advisable to put your pet in a travel kennel so you can remain focused on your driving. Use a mesh crate which will allow your pet to stand, lie down, or turn. Take some stopovers so you can stretch and also walk your pet a bit.

If your pet is not used to riding a vehicle, try to accustom him a few weeks before your trip.  Observe if he gets really fussy and gauge if he can really travel with you. Some give sugar candy (Never give chocolate!) to help with motion sickness. Try to avoid feeding your dog six hours prior to your trip on the road.

Hotels

Sadly not all hotels allow pets in their facilities. You need to check with your travel agent if your accommodation is pet-friendly. If you are able to book a pet-friendly motel or hotel, it will still be useful to have plastic bags and scooper so you can clean up after your pet does its thing. Try to book a room which will be at the end of a hall so in case your pet gets loud, other guests will not be bothered.

When bringing your pet with you, travel planning is very vital for its safety. Planning well ahead of time will ensure a perfect holiday for you and your animal buddy.

The World’s most expensive Christmas tree at Emirates Palace

The Emirates Palace in the Abu Dhabi displays what they clam to be the most expensive Christmas tree in the whole world.

Now do I hear, “How much? How much?!”

The jewel ornaments hanging on this Christmas tree sums up to around £7 million or roughly $11 million. It is surely a Christmas setup to put all the spot lights on the hotel and set them apart from all the luxury hotels in the region.

The plan for the Christmas décor is to have something different. Indeed, they have achieved this purpose and the hotel is now convincing the Guinness Book of World Records for a certification.  According to the hotel management, the Christmas tree will also not raise brows in the region since Abu Dhabi is a pretty liberal place even with Muslims comprising the majority of the population.

The 13-meter bejewelled Christmas tree is set at the lobby of the 302-room Emirates Palace. It is pretty amazing to see expensive bracelets, watches, and necklaces adorning a Christmas tree.

The official count of precious stones, sapphires, emeralds, pearls, and diamonds is at 181 mixed with the other traditional ornaments.

Aside from being the most expensive, we are pretty sure this is the most heavily guarded Christmas tree in the world, with security details on a round the clock basis.

Royal Holiday: 8 Castles in Europe where you can sleep in style

Treat yourself to a holiday fit for a royalty. Here are some castles in Europe from which you can choose your royal highness:

Thornbury Castle (England)

The Thornbury Castle in South Gloucs has been witness to the complexities of royal life, betrayals, romance, imprisonments and beheadings.  Believe it or not, you can get the chamber where Ann Boleyn and Henry VIII used to stay.

Dromoland Castle Hotel and Country State (Ireland)

This castle in Clare, Ireland was first constructed during the 16^th century and the castle that you see today was completed around 1835. It now serves as a 5-star hotel complete with a golf course, spa, and great food. Back in 2004, then US President George W. Bush stayed overnight at Dromoland for a summit involving the US and the European Union. The most powerful man in the world was kept safe by around 7,000 policemen, private security, and the military.

Chateau de Castel Novel (France)

This French castle has changed hands through centuries to different prominent families of the region. Once it was owned by Henri de Jouvenel who tied the knots with famous novelist, Colette. The castle was bought ni the 1950s and was converted into a luxurious hotel and restaurant. Aside from sleeping under the silk linens, try fishing, kayaking, canoeing, or maybe a round of golf in Chateau de Castel Novel.

Glenapp Castle (Scotland)

The Glenapp Castle in South Ayrshire, Scotland was the former home of the family of the Earl of Inchcape. The structure was designed by Davide Bryce and constructed in 1870. It was renovated and expanded through 1917 and 1982. The castle was bought by hoteliers in Scotland and was restored to become a luxury hotel which started welcoming guests back in 2000.

Bran Castle (Romania)

The Bran Castle has always been associated as the home of Dracula but there is no clear evidence that Vlade Tepes stayed there. The castle in Transylvania served as a defense structure versus the Ottoman Empire. It became a royal home when Queen Marie made it her residence. The Bran Castle actually operates as a public museum but the Round Tower of Bran Castle can be arranged to accommodate tourists who want to experience staying overnight.

Schloss Lembeck (Germany)

This luxurious destination was erected in the 12^th Century and has been the property of the Merveldt family for around 600 years. The castle was refurbished in 1692. During the 300^th anniversary of Schloss Lembeck, the owners opted to celebrate with theatre performances, concerts, and equestrian tourneys. A nice trivia about the place: The family of the Merveldts had to leave the castle during the 1970’s because of the very high cost of maintenance.

Castel Brando (Italy)

The original structure which was built in 46 AD can still be seen to this day. Expansions were done during the 13^th century and early parts of the 16^th century. In 1959, the castle was converted into a monastery. When it was purchased in 1997, the place was renovated to become today’s hotel and museum.

Hospederia del Real Monasterio (Spain)

This castle in Guadalupe traces its roots to a small chapel that was originally erected on site. King Alfonso XI commissioned the construction of a hermitage. During the 1400s and the 1700s, the Hieronymites acted as caretakers of the building. The structure today is being maintained by the order of Franciscans. The town is home to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The statue was buried for six centuries before it was rediscovered.

Everyone is coming up with lists of Christmas travel destinations as families prepare to enjoy the holidays. We have featured in our recent post warm Christmas destinations but for those who may be dreaming of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or maybe of white Christmas then this list is for you.

Vienna

If you will be in Europe this holiday season, then consider spending the Yuletide in Vienna, Austria.  This city is picture of postcard perfect elegance and warmth which spells the true meaning of the season.

Visit the Schonbrunn Palace which is among the most iconic monuments in Austria. The palace and the surrounding gardens give you a peek of the lifestyle of the country’s royalties. There are also classical concerts that you can attend at the City Hall for those who want to dig down into their emotions for that holiday spirit. Of course you don’t want to miss out on shopping gifts for your loved ones back home, and Vienna offers you Christmas markets which are considered as among the best in Europe.

Cologne

Everything comes alive in Cologne as the calendar hits December. Christmas traditions make sure you enjoy Christmas in terms of sight, smell, taste, hear, and feel. The best way to experience the holiday in Cologne is by going to the Christmas market by the Kolner Dom cathedral. The magic of the holidays are evident thru the Christmas lights all over the place, the music, the food, theaters, and smiles on everyone’s face.

Try their traditional delicacies and have some aromatic wine to keep you warm. There’s a ton of things to try while spending your Christmas in Cologne. Millions of people go to Cologne every year to enjoy a traditional Christmas. We are pretty sure the sheer number proves it all.

Bruges

Prague

The Old Town of Prague is magnificent any time of the year you choose to visit. But if you will be there for Christmas, the colors, the lights, and the scents just makes it extraordinarily wonderful.  The Central Square shows everyone how Christmas is celebrated in this corner of the Czech Republic. See puppets, dance with locals, sing, and toys for children wherever your eyes turn. The markets, no matter the weather, are open every day. Aside from stuffing your shopping bags, try their Becherovka and Trdelnik and you will be guaranteed with a merry, merry Christmas.

Rovaniemi

This city in Finland is perfect for those who want to experience a magical Christmas.  Imagine this: You will be hearing Christmas carols as you walk along the street, enjoy the glitter of trees decorated for the holidays, see scenes of the nativity, reindeers might just be passing by your hotel window, and you experience this under the Aurora Borealis. Everything will remind you of how Christmas was explained to you when you were still young. Santa  is flying by? Who knows!

Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines. Locals claim that the country celebrate the longest Christmas in the world. You can see Christmas decorations right after they celebrate the Halloween and the merry making stretches until the first few weeks of January. It is like crazy in terms of the lights along their streets, houses, and shopping centers. You have to bear with some heavy traffic  especially a few days before Christmas.

Filipinos are very warm and will be more than willing to share their Christmas with you. Enjoy their simbang gabi, good food, and close family ties. If you were to choose to celebrate Christmas in Asia, you can never go wrong to pick Manila. You also have a choice of 7,107 islands to hop onto after the holidays before you go back home and go back to your daily routines.

New York

NYC, the city that never sleeps. It gets pretty cold in Christmas, too. But there is something to a Christmas in New York that you cannot find anywhere else. In this very busy mega city, you will feel a sense of family when you see the giant tree at the Rockefeller, decors at the Sixth Avenue, windows at Macy’s, and the Central Park.  Some may call them a cliché but New York is pretty cozy come Christmas season.

Quebec

Great home cooked meals enjoyed by all generations explain what Christmas is like in Quebec. The narrow streets blanketed by snow, lights hanging by the trees, and Christmas songs in the air will make feel everyone at home. You can visit their Christmas market called Marche de Noel and find toys, maple products, baked goods, winter accessories, and liquors as well.

Top 7 places to experience the best Italian foods and drinks without being in Italy

When you think of Italy, you think of great food. Imagine Italy and you see a rustic environment, air filled with flavors, pizza, cheese, pasta, wine… yummy! If you are bored with the Italian restaurant a few blocks away from home or if you are traveling for business or pleasure and craving for Italian food, there are certain places across the globe where your cravings will be answered.

These little Italies come complete with the food factor, authenticity of the cuisines, and really very Italian feel of everything. The ambiance is not just created by interior designers to make a good image of a business but real warmth that you feel when you look for something Italian.

Norton Street in Sydney, Australia

If you are in Australia, go to Norton Street in Sydney and experience Italy while you are in the Land Down Under. This place in Leichardt offers you a lot of choices when it comes to Italian cafes and restaurants. It is in the middle of a commercial district that has a movie house and shopping arcade but it manages to keep a genuine Italian feel. You can even sit down in a piazza and watch people going in and out of the shops around it.

New York City

NYC might be an obvious choice for a list of top little Italy places. The Little Italy in this corner of lower Manhattan has a lot of stories to tell. If you are heading to New York and want a real Italian experience, go there around September when they celebrate the feast day of San Gennaro attracting tourists and locals alike.

La Boca in Buenos Aires, Argentina

La Boca is in the heart of an old port in one of the oldest districts of Buenos Aires. The place exudes with that old world feel and Italian charm. This comes natural since the first settlers of La Boca are the Italians who emigrated from Genoa. You can enjoy great Italian dishes and flush it down with some very good wine. It is also home to Boca Juniors, a famous soccer team in Argentina. Be sure to trek along the caminito and checkout the goods of the vendors, enjoy some food, and of course, listen to the sounds of tango. Cap the day with a stroll along the waterfront.

The Hill in St. Louis

According to statistics, the population at The Hill is 75% Italian.  And truly it caters to everything Italian that you might want to see. Check out their iconic Saint Ambrose Church and Amighetti’s Bakery. If you are a baseball fan, then you might be familiar with the names of Joe Garagiola and Yogi Berra who were born in this neighbourhood.

Mooca in Sao Paolo, Brazil

Sao Paolo is plainly in love with the Italian culture and Italian food. Mooca has three universities within its boundaries, and for sure these are guarantees that pizza consumption will never go down any time soon.

San Diego

The Little Italy in San Diego built its foundation a fishing community composed mainly of Italians. The place evolved into a commercial and residential district through the years but the Italian culture is stamped everywhere. You can find Italian restaurants, art galleries, and Italian retailers in San Diego’s Little Italy. Almost every month, festivities are held in this corner of the city.

South Philadelphia

South Philadelphia is now a melting pot of cultures, but its population has a big chunk of Italians. If you are craving for an excellent cheesesteak go to Pat’s King of Steaks. There is also another great food place just across the street called Gino’s which also serve good cheese steaks. Aside from these restaurants, you can also visit their Italian market.
