Tropical Storm Isaac Threatens New Orleans, Ship Itineraries
Tropical Storm Isaac continued west-northwest over the Gulf of Mexico with a hurricane warning in effect for east of Morgan City, La., to Destin, Fla., including New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. The Port of New Orleans planned to cease operations by 5 p.m. today, closing to cargo traffic. The closure is not expected to impact cruise traffic, because Carnival Cruise Lines' Carnival Conquest sailed normally Sunday and is due back on Sept. 2. The Carnival Elation is scheduled to arrive Thursday at the Erato Street Cruise Terminal.
Meanwhile, the Port of Miami did not reopen at noon today as hoped, and conditions will be further assessed at 2 p.m. Eastern time. That means the Carnival Valor will remain at sea until it can dock, further delaying boarding set for today. The Valor, now operating its Aug. 18 departure, shortened its next cruise to five days, visiting Grand Cayman and Montego Bay, with hopes that check-in could take place 4-7:30 p.m. Monday with departure at 8 p.m.
Likewise, Carnival Imagination remains at sea until it can return to the Port of Miami. With hopes of returning today, the ship had hoped to board passengers from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today. Now, that will be delayed as the port remains closed. Carnival requests that passengers on Valor and Imagination not proceed to the cruise terminal until further notice.
The National Hurricane Center predicted that Isaac will become a hurricane before reaching the northern gulf coast on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph with higher gusts with tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 205 miles.

Spirit carry on bag fee raises to $100
For a hundred bucks, you can go to dinner at a decent restaurant, purchase a DVD box set, or—if you're flying Spirit—tote a bag onto a plane.
Effective November 6, fee-sucking Spirit will charge $100 for carry-on bags paid for at the gate. It's an increase of 122 percent over the current price of $45. If you reserve your carry-on privileges ahead of time online, it'll cost you $35 bucks as of November 6. (Current price is $30.) And if you pay for your carry-on bag at the airport counter, you'll be charged $50. (Up from the current price of $40).
All Spirit flyers may bring a single personal item that can fit under the seat in front of you for free. This would include something like a purse or laptop computer. How generous.
Passengers can avoid the fee by reserving a carry-on bag ahead of time or by checking a bag. But Spirit is also upping other rates on its ridiculous miles-long fee menu, including some charges for those checked bags. First checked bags currently cost $23 for domestic flights and $28 for international flights. Come November 6, Spirit will impose a flat $25 fee for first checked bags on both domestic and international flights.
The easily avoided $100 carry-on charge is probably not going to become a major source of revenue for Spirit. So what's the big idea? We contacted the airline for an explanation. A spokesperson from Spirit told us, "We don't want any of our customers to wait until they get to the boarding gate to pay for their carry-on bags as this delays the boarding process for everyone. We expect that our new $100 fee charged for those who wait until they get to the gate will ensure that customers purchase their bags before arriving at the gate."
The spokesperson also said that the fee changes have "simplified" the airline's pricing structure by matching domestic and international bag charges. Some international bag fees have, in fact, dropped, such as the aforementioned cost for first checked bags on international flights.
Still, charging $100 for a carry-on bag is brazen. This looks like it could be one more grubby publicity grab by Spirit, which appears to believe that anything short of a disastrous corporate sex scandal is good marketing. (Let's not give them any ideas.) For evidence, see Spirit's campaign against passenger protections enacted by the government, as well as its objectionable advertising.

Norwegian Breakaway to Debut Free-Fall Water Slide and Ropes Course

Norwegian Cruise Line’s new 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will feature a three-story sports and recreation center with five water slides, including two with free fall sections. The facility also will include a large ropes course -- with a plank extending over the side of the ship -- a nine-hole miniature golf course, a basketball court and a rock climbing wall. “It’s really extensive,” said Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan at press conference at CLIA’s cruise3sixty conference. “It’s like going to camp.”
The two free-fall slides start with guests standing up and then the floor drops from underneath, propelling them into a loop. Two additional side-by-side twister slides (called The Whip) plunge guests through a spiral. For a more relaxing ride, there is an open-flume slide. The five slides can accommodate 1,000 people per hour.
Norwegian Breakaway, which will launch in April 2013, also will feature a Nickelodeon-themed Aqua Park for kids with a kid-sized pool and slide, multiple water features, bungee trampoline and spider web, a 24-foot enclosed climbing cage with a spiral slide. A pool for parents is adjacent so they can keep an eye on their offspring.
The ropes course, billed as the largest at sea, will have more than 40 elements, including a zip track. The Plank will evoke memories of pirate ships with a platform that extends eight feet over the side of the ship. Those who brave it can have their photo taken. Of course, guests will be tethered to a safety harness.
Currently under construction at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenberg, Germany, Norwegian Breakaway will arrive in its year-round homeport of New York City in early May 2013. The ship will begin weekly summer seven-day cruises to Bermuda on May 12, 2013. From October 2013 through April 2014, the ship will offer sailings to the Bahamas and Florida and the Southern Caribbean.

Blige, who continues her mini-residency performances at the Circus Maximus Theater, and Madonna. You might have been planning your road trip in the U.S. and Las Vegas is in your list, but you are wondering what you can do in the Sin City when you have kids tagging along. A pit stop in Las Vegas with the family is a possibility sans the casinos and other adult offerings at the Strip.
Here are some things you can do in Vegas with the whole family:
Renewal of wedding vows
Your kids might have seen your wedding album a million times and they might have told you to have another wedding a gazillion times so she can be the flower girl or he can be the ring bearer. Vegas is a perfect destination not only for instant weddings but a fun location to renew your wedding vows. The kids will enjoy the limo ride and maybe Elvis asking you for the I do’s.
Fountain show and gelato at the Bellagio

Camping

A few steps on the gas pedal from the city and you will be at Lake Mead. This is a recreational area and national park which was inaugurated when Hoover Dam branched the flow of Colorado River. You are guaranteed your piece of shoreline and water at any time of the year along the 100 mile stretch of the lake. In case you do not have your own boat, you can rent from the marina nearby.
Snowboarding and Skiing
An hour from Las Vegas,, you can have a fun time in the snow on the 300 acre property of Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort between November and April. Advance or beginners will enjoy the slopes and mountain trails. You might not have packed your coats and skis but you can rent all the gear needed. The resort also provides skiing and snowboarding lessons for adults and kids.
Circus Circus
If you want a freebie, kid friendly show, head to the Circus Circus for their juggler and acrobats. The show is located indoors and you can actually get a sit so it still nice to catch even on chilly or rainy nights in the desert.
