New York Airports Remain Closed, Another Cruise Ship Delayed

The day after Sandy slammed the Northeast, New York area airports remained closed and at least one more cruise ship delayed a departure due to the storm, now officially a post-tropical cyclone or “Superstorm,” as the media has dubbed it. At midday Oct. 30, Sandy was moving over Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with sustained winds of 45 mph. Wind gusts of up to 90 mph had been reported in the New York area on Monday night.

The aviation website www.FlightAware.com said more than 15,700 flights had been cancelled since Sunday and that virtually all airlines are offering fee-free changes. The site said no reopen time has been set yet for New York area airports. The Philadelphia airport is severely impacted with 1,529 flights cancelled Oct. 29 and 1,085 cancelled Oct. 30. New York airports have nearly 1,000 cancellations each. “We expect more cancellations to happen, especially in NYC, soon,” FlightAware said. So far, only 635 cancellations are scheduled for Oct. 31, but FlightAware expects this number to rise once damage can be assessed and re-open times are communicated.

Meanwhile, Princess Cruises said the Caribbean Princess tentatively plans to sail from Boston to New York at 5 p.m. Oct. 30. “The sea conditions will require the vessel to operate at significantly reduced speeds and will impact their arrival into New York,” Princess said. “We currently expect to be delayed by at least one day and arriving no earlier than Thursday morning. These have been unprecedented weather conditions and difficult to forecast and according to the latest information from New York, the Brooklyn pier is not yet operational. Once the ship is underway and more is known about the exact arrival time in New York, we will provide additional updates.”

Passengers are being allowed to disembark in Boston. “We are currently rebooking air travel for those passengers who purchased air through Princess, and are offering complimentary phone and Internet services for those passengers who need to make changes to their independent travel plans,” Princess said. As a gesture of goodwill, Princess is offering compensation to passengers in the form of a future cruise credit. Details will be communicated to passengers onboard once the full impact on the voyage is known.

For those on the next cruise, a 10-day Caribbean voyage, passengers will receive a per diem for any cruise days missed due to late embarkation. Passengers who have Princess air and/or transfers will be contacted regarding their travel plans.

Most other cruise lines have not changed itineraries since the last updates on Oct. 29. Royal Caribbean International said it has not altered the boarding time or itinerary of any ship that departs from Baltimore or Cape Liberty in New Jersey on Nov. 1-4. The line did urge guests sailing on Brilliance of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas to monitor www.RoyalCaribbean.com for additional updates. Brilliance of the Seas remained in port at St. John, New Brunswick, until Oct. 30, while Enchantment of the Seas remained at sea after cancelling plans to visit Bermuda.

Also, the evening of Oct. 29, Norwegian Cruise Line posted Facebook updates from the masters of two ships at sea. Norwegian Gem Capt. Roger Gustavsen wrote: “Hurricane Sandy has started to impact the east coast, but we remain safely at sea, out of the storm’s path, 400 nautical miles off the southeast coast of New York City. The Port of New York remains closed due to safety; therefore, we will hold our current position until we receive word that it safe to sail back into port. The latest forecast shows us being able to dock tomorrow evening and until then we will keep everyone on board safe, comfortable and entertained.”

Meanwhile, other mid-Atlantic and Northeast airports were already open or expecting to open shortly. Boston was operational with minim post-hurricane disruption, according to FlightAware. Philadelphia also was open and expecting flights from Delta and Lufthansa. Washington-Dulles was open and expecting flights from Delta and foreign carriers. Baltimore was expecting some scheduled flights.

The Westchester County-White Plains Airport planned to reopen late morning while Atlantic City International was planning to reopen at 2 p.m. Oct. 30.

Hurricane Sandy Continues To Play Havoc with Cruise Ship Itineraries

Hurricane Sandy continues to play havoc with cruise ship itineraries, and at least one voyage was outright cancelled due to problems created by the massive storm. Carnival Cruise Lines cancelled the Oct. 28 departure of the Carnival Glory from Norfolk, where high winds and tidal flooding were expected. Carnival said the cruise terminal is located behind a flood gate that was expected to close when the storm hit, closing off access to the ship. The line said refunds will be processed to the original form of payment within two weeks.

Norwegian Cruise Line expected the Norwegian Jewel to embark guests in New York and depart as scheduled on Oct. 28. The U.S. Coast Guard planned to close the Port of New York at 6 p.m. on Oct. 28, thereby delaying Norwegian Gem’s arrival in New York on Oct. 29; the ship will remain at sea. It is unknown when the port will reopen, so guests scheduled to sail on Norwegian Gem’s Oct. 29 departure were asked to continue to check the cruise line’s webpage for updates.

The Carnival Sensation’s Oct. 28 departure from Port Canaveral was delayed to Oct. 29. The cruise was shortened by a day and will operate as a three-day cruise visiting Nassau and Freeport. Guests will receive a pro-rated cruise fare refund.

The Carnival Miracle’s Oct. 29 cruise from New York was to depart a day early to avoid the storm. Carnival said it was unable to reschedule the delivery of food, beverages and other supplies, so it changed the itinerary so it could get provisions at the first port, which will be Port Canaveral on Oct. 31. Carnival said it will pay the extra day’s gratuities for guests and will reimburse them for additional parking expenses at the port.

The Carnival Dream’s Oct. 27 departure was delayed a day from Port Canaveral and the cruise was shortened to six days. The call at Roatan was cancelled. The line will refund a pro-rated amount of cruise fare and government fees and taxes for Roatan. Pre-paid shore excursions purchased for Roatan will be automatically refunded, and gratuities will be adjusted to reflect the shortened voyage.

Also delayed by one day was Carnival Ecstasy’s Oct. 27 departure from Port Canaveral. The five-day cruise was shortened to a four-day voyage visiting Nassau and Freeport with a call at Key West cancelled. Guests will receive a refund of the pro-rated cruise fare and government fees and taxes for Key West. Pre-paid shore excursions purchased for Key West were automatically refunded, and gratuities adjusted.

Royal Caribbean International said the Jewel of the Seas will not depart Boston Oct. 28 as scheduled, but will remain docked in port until Oct. 30. Due to the delayed departure, the itinerary will be modified; guests will be informed of the changes once on the ship.

Holland America Line’s Eurodam was forced to dock at a cargo pier in Jacksonville, Fla., to wait out the storm. Disembarking passengers were taken by motorcoach to Fort Lauderdale, where the Oct. 14 cruise was scheduled to conclude on Oct. 27. Passengers booked on the “Malt Shop Memories” cruise were bused to Jacksonville to board the ship.

Princess Cruises said the Oct. 26 Emerald Princess cruise from Quebec to Fort Lauderdale cancelled calls to Bar Harbor, Boston and Newport, R.I., and replaced them with Port Saguenay and Corner Brook.

Disney Cruise Line said the Disney Fantasy left Port Canaveral on Oct. 27 for a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage. Its itinerary was altered to replace a stop in Grand Cayman on Oct. 29 with a day at sea, and a call in Costa Maya on Oct. 30 with a stop in Grand Cayman.

Seven Outrageous Halloween Houses You Must See!

Supreme_clientele_travel_hallo

For some families across America, Halloween home-decorating is taken very seriously. The lights, music and decorations involved to create these spooky scenes on their front lawns are certainly starting to give typical Christmas cheer a run for its money.

All seven families ABCNews.com interviewed while compiling the list of the most outrageous Halloween homes admitted to spending no less than an entire month putting their creepy creations together. For some, Halloween is just hobby. But for these folks, haunting their neighborhoods has become an absolute obsession.

Take a look, if you dare, at these elaborate, greatly ghoulish haunted homes:

Halloween 'Gangnam Style' - Leesburg, Va.

With only two years of practice under their belt, the Edwards Landing Lights home, in Leesburg, Va., has already mastered how to get the attention of their Halloween entertainment-seeking fans.

This year, their 'Gangnam Style' synchronized routine is garnering a lot of attention, already surpassing 400,000 views on YouTube since it was originally posted Oct. 17.

Their over-the-top show features 13 full-length songs, four short intros and a handful of announcements thrown in the mix to keep the viewers guessing. Edward Landing Lights divided the songs into two roughly 25-minute shows that will alternate depending on the night you visit.

Bates Haunt - Taylorsville, Utah

Dave Bates first fell in love with Halloween, and Halloween decorating, at a very young age after a visit to Disney's "Haunted Mansion."

"I probably haunted my house since I was about eight. I just experimented with different things and they kept getting bigger and bigger," Bates said. "I didn't have anywhere to store them, so it became more of a virtual haunt. There's not a lot of stuff to store. It's mostly electronic instead of having a ton of props."

Although he's gained quite a following for his annual virtual Halloween house show, Bates tries to limit the amount of time he spends on the planning process.

"I usually wait, even though I'm thinking about it all year," he explained.

Each year, Bates gets upwards of 1,000 visitors coming to sit on his front lawn to take in the spooky sights. The presentation is especially creative because he writes all his own music and lyrics to accompany the light show, which usually takes him about a month and a half to compose.

As a web designer by day, Bates's favorite thing about his Halloween tradition is that it combines all the things he likes to do: Video, music, computers, "it gets the whole gambit," he joked.

This year marks the 10th anniversary for his Halloween projection show.

Halloween Light Show - Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Scott Johnson may only be 22, but in the three years he's been doing his elaborate haunted light show, he's certainly already giving more seasoned Halloween veterans a run for their money.

"I've always been into lighting, since fourth grade, doing theatrical lighting for shows and theatre," Johnson told ABCNews.com. "I was online looking at YouTube videos and saw all the Halloween and Christmas decorations and thought, 'I want to do that.'"

Johnson puts in a whopping eight months of prepping before his final reveal several days before Halloween. Programming the music to be in sync with the light show takes the longest, and to actually set up the display takes about two and a half weeks.

If you miss the spectacularly spooky light show earlier the night, have no fear, because he has it on a loop where the production runs about seven or eight times in a night.

His neighbors love the show. "They're either outside every night or looking out their windows, looking at how many people are watching, or how many cars are pulling up. They enjoy it," Johnson said. "A couple neighbors want to join in, want me to make pumpkin houses for their houses."

Johnson's favorite part is watching his audience's reactions to the whole show.

Haunted Halloween Lair - Spanish Fork, Utah

Matt Champneys said his "neighbors would be disappointed" if he stopped creating his Haunted Halloween Lair. Although there are a select few neighbors that complain about the amount of people that show up to walk through his family's creepy corridors, Champneys is comforted by the fact "there's no law against having people to your house" and said the police have always been really nice about it.

Champneys' daughter, Jessica, first decided she wanted to start elaborately decorating their home for Halloween when she was eight years old.

"She called it a 'Spooky Hollow Fright.' She just decided to do it by herself, so I decided I should help her. Now she's 19 and she's having a lot of fun. She's still doing it," Champneys said.

There is no charge to take the five-minute walk-through of their home. The Champneys family, along with a little help from friends, act as tour guides telling jokes and stories of the set-up as they take you from one point to the next.

"We have a graveyard and one of my favorite jokes is that we have a famous composer buried here, but now he's just decomposing," Chamneys laughed.

The family has been doing this for 10 years. When they first started they only had about 100 people walk through the home. Now, Champneys said, "We're overrun. It's a lot of fun."

Mansion of Macabre - Palm Harbor, Fla.

Dr. Paul Duryea is an orthodontist by day, Halloween-aficionado by night. He's been decorating his "yard haunt" for so long, he's gotten to be friends with some big-name players in the decorating industry, such as people that manufacture props for Six Flags and other large scale events.

"It's been a lot of fun. For me, it's a hobby and I do it to entertain my patients," Duryea said.

Dubbed the 'Mansion of Macabre,' the yard haunt accepts donations for the Florida Suncoast Hospice. Duryea's neighbors are "very cognizant of the fact" he wants to respect their privacy, and explains "they've been extremely tolerant and gracious because it's for charity."

Duryea believes Halloween is a great holiday for kids, and a great excuse for parents to get out and spend quality time with their children.

He tries to make his haunt as realistic as possible, saying, "Most people think they're going to come here and just see a bunch of pumpkins, but I've got over a ton of smoke machines. The smoke is scented like swamp. It's not bloody, it's not gory. It's just very realistic. Everything from an electric chair to hangmen, and every year I keep trying to improve, making it better and refining it."

Pirate Ship Halloween Yard - Chesapeake, Va.

Cindy Matthews, 40, has been decorating her mother's and her own yard for 12 years straight. She got inspired by playing around online looking at Halloween DIY projects and videos, and her passion grew from there.

She begins putting up her props and decorations on Sept. 1, and leaves them up until Halloween. The huge pirate ship in her mother's yard is probably the most elaborate part of the yard-decorating process since it takes several hours to assemble. Matthews "got smart" after the first year of making the ship, and has since marked each board for easy assembly and tear-down steps.

Matthews' neighbors love her decorations, and she has even gotten some special attention from officials in town for them.

"They love it. Around here, we've got very little kids. The first year, maybe 25 showed up. But now hundreds show up. One year the fire department showed up and asked if they could hand out their candy at my house because no one was coming to the fire house," Matthews said.

Halloween is Mathews' favorite holiday. And although her mother loves Christmas just as much, Matthews won't be volunteering to put the Santa statue on her roof.

"Mom gets into Christmas, but after Halloween I'm basically wore out," said Matthews.

13 Skeletons - Bridgewater, N.J.

The Adams family of Bridgewater, N.J., much like the infamous Addams family in the movies, really gets into Halloween.

Since 2006, Jim Adams has set up an elaborate skeleton display in their front yard. Each year the display gets a new theme, and the number of incorporated skeletons grows with each day leading up to the big night. He never uses more than 13 skeletons because he wants passersby to understand what's going on, even at 50 miles per hour.

"It started out as putting one skeleton on top of another one's shoulder. I'm sitting in my rocking chair looking at it thinking, 'You know, I think it can go higher.' I never intended to move them around, but one of the parents at my daughter's school said the kids think they're moving around. But I was just tweaking it, trying to get them in different spots. So that's how it started," Adams said. "Each year we try to do something different. Come out of a grave, pulling each other out, then another year, out of a chest with smoke coming out of it."

Adams' daughter was suggesting ideas this year and came up with a hay ride theme. The neighbors love it, and some guests to see the skeletons even leave gifts as a token of appreciate for the entertainment.

"So many people drive by and stop to take photos. Last year we got letters in our mailbox. One time I got a beer with a skeleton on it dropped it on my porch, just saying we enjoy driving by. It's mostly commuters that see it and kids on the school bus. We always get someone stopping by just telling us the joy they get out of it," said Adams.

The Adams will continue to spook their yard with skeletons "until it becomes a problem."

Hurricane Sandy closed in on the United States on Saturday...

Supreme_clientele_travel_hurri

Hurricane Sandy closed in on the United States on Saturday as it threatened to smack the eastern third of the country with torrential rains, high winds, major flooding and power outages a week before the U.S. presidential election. On its current projected track, Sandy could make U.S. landfall on Monday night or Tuesday anywhere between Maryland and southern New England, forecasters said. Rain accumulations of up to 12 inches and heavy snowfall inland are considered likely in some areas.
As it merges with an Arctic jet stream, forecasters said Sandy has all the ingredients to transform into a "super storm" unlike anything seen over the eastern United States in decades. It is a massive, slow-moving storm with tropical storm-force winds extending across 650 miles. Forecasters said its flooding impact could span multiple tides with a storm surge of 4 to 8 feet in Long Island Sound, the southern portion of Lower New York Bay and Delaware Bay. "This is going to go well inland," Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate said. "This is not a coastal threat alone," Fugate added, warning of the potential for flooding in Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as more than 2 feet of snow in West Virginia. Governors in states along the U.S. East Coast declared emergencies, with officials urging residents to stock up on food, water and batteries.
The storm's wind field expanded on Saturday, with hurricane force winds now extending 105 miles from its center, increasing the risk of downed trees and power lines, government forecasters said. Coastal flooding posed a major threat, particularly in low-lying areas like New York City, the global financial nerve center, and Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. That threat was described in a blog posted on Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) by veteran weather forecaster Bryan Norcross as "serious as a heart attack for anybody near the rising water."

Sandy claimed at least 59 lives as it made its way through the Caribbean islands, including 44 people in southern Haiti, mostly from flash flooding and mudslides, according to authorities. Another 11 people died in Cuba, largely due to from collapsed buildings, officials said. Coming in the hectic run-up to the November 6 election, the storm presented a challenge to the campaigns of President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. As Sandy approached, Romney was rescheduling all of his campaign events planned for Virginia on Sunday and flying to Ohio instead. And Obama's campaign announced that Vice President Joe Biden has canceled a Saturday trip to Virginia Beach.

EMERGENCY PREPARATIONS

Ahead of the election, millions of Americans are taking advantage of early voting arrangements to cast their ballots. State officials said they have put in place contingency plans in case Sandy caused extended power outages or other problems that could disrupt voting. The White House said Obama convened a call with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA's Fugate and other officials to receive a Saturday update on ongoing government actions to prepare for the storm.
Officials said 50 to 60 million people could be affected by Sandy, which many forecasters warn could be more destructive than Irene, which caused billions of dollars in damage across the U.S. Northeast in August 2011. "People should be ready for the possibility of power outages paired with cold temperatures. Now is the time to prepare," Fugate said.

In New York, authorities were considering closing down the city's buses, subways, commuter railroads, bridges and tunnels in preparation for the storm's arrival.
A potential shutdown could begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, when the last commuter trains would depart, with the entire system to be closed down by 3 a.m. Monday, officials said.
Sandy was located about 335 miles east southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and packing top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour late on Saturday afternoon, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. Little overall change in strength was expected ahead of its anticipated U.S. landfall, it said. The storm picked up a little forward speed but was still moving slowly over the Atlantic at 13 miles per hour. "There's no avoiding a significant storm-surge event over a large area. We just can't pinpoint who's going to get the worst of it," National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said.

'BLOWING PRETTY HARD'

Tropical storm-force winds were being felt near the North Carolina coast. There were tropical storm warnings for all of the coastal portion of the state, along with about half of South Carolina. High winds also threatened to disrupt air travel along the U.S. East Coast. Along North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands, which jut out into the Atlantic, residents and officials said they were taking a wait-and-see approach to the storm. As the winds and rains increased Saturday, ferry service between Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands on the Outer banks was suspended due to water on Ocracoke's only highway. "Right now it's blowing pretty hard," said Ray Waller, manager of the Ocracoke office of North Carolina Ferry Division.
Outer Banks residents, with memories of damaging flooding from last year's Hurricane Irene, moved vehicles to higher ground and secured outside objects ahead of winds of more than 60 mph beginning Saturday night and potentially lasting into Monday. A buoy 225 miles south of Cape Hatteras recorded 26-foot (8-metre) waves amid blistering wind gusts early on Saturday, authorities said.
